I have always loved creating with color and line and I was fortunate to have a mom that gave me access to art supplies when I was little. When life felt chaotic and out of control, she would scribble designs that I later learned had a name…mandalas.
The magical world that opens when creation begins was so comfortable and familiar to me as a child. Entering adulthood, however, outer world wisdom seemed to dictate that I should leave that behind as I got my education and worked in the medical field.
“Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up.” Pablo Picasso
I felt a new sense of freedom and relief when I left my job in 1989 (encouraged by my painting Dad, Paul Kuo!) to pursue art full time. Initially I created watercolor desert landscapes and botanicals, before returning to mandalas in 2004.
Discovering the medium of acrylics in 2016 led to a love of creating contemporary mixed media pieces featuring collage. Experimenting with different kinds of collage eventually led me to the gelli plate and a new love affair began.
Now I am happily engaged in creating mixed media artwork with LOTS of gelli print collage. I am particularly drawn to painting birds, horses, dragonflies, empowered women, and landscapes. I LOVE color and consider color frequency a form of medicine, just as sound frequency can be.
I feel creating is a way to connect to the very best parts of ourselves, and that when we are creating, we are bringing about beautiful order from the depths of chaos.
“Chaos is the birthplace of creation.” – Prometheus
